Pillars and Posts vs Pick and Go

Description

Small sided game where defenders (pillars/posts) defend against pick-and-go attackers. Points are scored for successful defensive stops and for attackers gaining ground.

Purpose

To improve defensive roles and intensity around breakdown, communication under pressure, and decision-making in small spaces. Pick-and-go attackers work on quick decision-making and support play. Pick or pop off the floor, you decide!

Learning Outcomes

  • Quick realization of defensive roles (pillars/posts) and responsibilities
  • Effective communication under pressure in tight spaces
  • Decision-making for both defenders and attackers in congested areas
  • Support play and offloading options for pick-and-go attackers

Equipment

  • Balls
  • Cones to mark playing area
  • Rucking pads (optional to reduce impact)

Setup

  • 10m x 10m grid marked with cones
  • 12 players: 6 defenders (pillars/posts) and 6 attackers (pick-and-go)

Rules

  • Attackers attempt to gain ground through pick-and-go plays
  • Defenders must maintain their roles as pillars/posts and work together to stop attackers
  • Points awarded for successful defensive stops and for attackers gaining ground.
  • Instant Win: If defenders force a turnover or stop the attackers for 3 consecutive plays, they win the round.
  • Instant Win: If attackers successfully gain ground on 3 consecutive plays, or get outside the grid they win the round.

Instructions

  1. Divide players into two teams: defenders (pillars/posts) and attackers (pick-and-go).
  2. Set up a 5m x 5m grid using cones.
  3. Attackers start with the ball and attempt to gain ground through pick-and-go plays or pop off the floor to support runners.
  4. Defenders must maintain their roles as pillars/posts and work together to stop attackers.
  5. Play for a set time (e.g., 10 minutes) or until a team reaches a predetermined score.
  6. Rotate roles after each round to ensure all players experience both attacking and defending.

Coaching Points

  • Pillar (1st Defender): The player standing directly beside the ruck. Their role is to defend against immediate "pick and go" runners from the opposition scrum-half and guard the immediate inside channel.
  • Post (2nd Defender): The player positioned immediately outside the pillar. They provide cover for the pillar and help stop runners from breaking through close to the breakdown - supporting the pillar in defensive efforts.
  • Rotating all players dynamically through pillars and posts roles to challenge adaptability.
  • Encourage clear and concise communication between defenders to coordinate tackles and cover.
