Rugby Netball

Purpose

Heart rate raiser. Fun, competitive, high intensity game with lots of running, dodging, passing, catching, and scoring.

Learnings

  • Cardiovascular fitness and endurance
  • Agility and quick directional changes
  • Hand-eye coordination for catching and passing
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Strategic thinking and spatial awareness

Setup

  • Field: 20m x 40m (or suitable open space)
  • Teams: 5-7 players per team
  • Equipment: Rugby ball or similar, cones to mark boundaries and end zones

Rules

  • Pass or kick-pass in any direction
  • Players cannot run with the ball
  • Turn over by Interception or successful blocked pass
  • Drop ball, players allowed to fight for possession
  • Score by catching in end zone or use ruck pads held up high to hit as target

Environment changes

Adjust field size or shape and team numbers based on available space and player ability. Create smaller fields for younger or less experienced players to ensure engagement and success or separate into ability groups SSGs.

Vary passing rules

To increase difficulty, restrict passing to one-handed passes only or introduce a rule that players must pass within 3 seconds of receiving the ball. This encourages quick decision-making and improves passing skills under pressure. Add overhead or below shoulder only passing rules to vary the skill challenge.
